A fourth oil discovery - Abare West - was made in the ultradeep waters of the prolific Santos Basin. Located in the pre-salt BM-S-9 concession, the discovery well 4-SPS-66C (4-BRSCA-723C) was drilled in 7,096 feet (2,163 meters) of water offshore Brazil, roughly 180 miles (290 kilometers) off the coast of Sao Paulo. Petrobras serves as the operator and holds a 45% interest; BG Group holds 30%; and Repsol holds the remaining 25% interest.
The discovery was drilled by the Stena DrillMAX drillship and encountered a hydrocarbon column containing oil, gas and carbon dioxide in a pre-salt reservoir. The well was analyzed and additional tests will be conducted in the area, which contains three additional discoveries – Iguacu, Carioca and Guara - all highly promising pre-salt finds.

Petrobras Unlocks Discovery at Abare West in Santos Pre-Salt
Type: New Discovery
Sep. 2009 - Petrobras, along with partners BG Group and Repsol, unlocked another new discovery in the Santos Basin pre-salt BM-S-9 concession area, in ultradeep waters offshore Brazil. The well 4-SPS-66C (4-BRSA-723C), know as Abaré Oeste (Abare West), proved the presence of an accumulation of oil and natural gas in a separate structure within the 1-SPS-50 (Carioca) evaluation plan area on BM-S-9. This is the fourth well drilled in block BM-S-9 and the existence of hydrocarbons was proved in all of them. Abare West is in 7,096 feet (2,163 meters) of water, approximately 180 miles (290 kilometers) off the coast of Sao Paulo State and encountered a hydrocarbon column containing oil, gas and carbon dioxide in pre-salt reservoir sections. The discovery proved oil, natural gas and carbon gas content sampling via a cable test carried out in reservoirs located at a depth of some 16,896 feet (5,150 meters) and data samplings are being conducted.
