The Greater Gullfaks area consists of numerous fields in the Norwegian North Sea, spanning Blocks 34/7, 34/8, 34/10 and 33/12. The first field in the area, Gullfaks, was discovered in 1978; and over time, field development was amended to incorporate satellite fields throughout the Greater Gullfaks area. By using existing infrastructure for newer fields, commerciality of discoveries was increased.
Statoil is the operator of the majority of the Greater Gullfaks area with a 70% share, partnering with Petoro, which holds the remaining 30%.
Gullfaks
The first discovery in the area, the Gullfaks oil field, is located on Block 34/10, roughly 109 miles (175 kilometers) from Bergen, Norway. The field is in water depths of 427 to 722 feet (130 to 220 meters) in the Tampen area. Recoverable reserves are estimated at 2 billion barrels of oil.
The field's reservoir consists of Middle Jurassic sandstones in the Brent group, and lower Jurassic and Upper Triassic sandstones in the Cook, Statford and Lunde formations. The reservoir is located in 5,577 to 6,562 feet (1,700 and 2,000 meters) below the seafloor.
The field was discovered in 1978; and soon after, the original plan for development and operation of Gullfaks included the Gullfaks A and B facilities (GF-A and GF-B). The Gullfaks C (GF-C) facility was approved in 1985.
In 2005, an amended plan for the field was approved, incorporating prospects and small discoveries in the area around the field. Under the new development plan, new discoveries are drilled and produced from existing facilities. There are more than 100 active production and injection wells on the Greater Gullfaks area.
The Gullfaks field came online in 1986 by subsea wells producing to the GF-A platform. Production from the Gullfaks field has been declining since it reached its peak plateau of 245,000 bopd in 1994; it is estimated that roughly 90% of the reserves have been produced. Efforts are being made to increase recovery by locating and draining pockets of remaining oil in water-flooded areas, and through continued massive water circulation.
Field Development
Three gravity-base concrete and steel topside production platforms are used for producing Gullfaks and its satellite fields in the area. Field development in the Greater Gullfaks area relies on water injection, gas injection and water/alternation gas injection (WAG), depending on the composition of the field being produced.
The first to commence production, the GF-A platform began producing from the Gullfaks field through subsea tiebacks on Dec. 22, 1986. This production platform is equipped with integrated production and drilling units, and water and gas injection facilities. The platform is used for processing, storing, and exporting recovered hydrocarbons.
The second platform to commence production (Feb. 29, 1988), the GF-B platform houses only first-stage separation facilities. The resources from GF-B are transferred to A and C for processing and storage.
Similar to GF-A, GF-C consists of integrated production and drilling systems, as well as water and gas injection facilities. This platform starting producing on Nov. 4, 1989, and on Oct. 7, 1994, GF-C set a record for producing 605,965 barrels in a single day.
Once oil is processed on either GF-A or GF-C, it is exported to loading buoys. Shuttle tankers then export processed oil. The remaining gas that isn't re-injected is exported through subsea pipelines to the onshore Karsto gas treatment plant north of Stavanger, Norway, and then on to Europe for further processing.
Satellite Fields
Tordis
The Tordis oil field, located on Block 34/7 in the Tampen area, lies in water depths of 656 feet (200 meters). The field commenced production in 1994, but underwent modifications in 2006 to increase the recovery of reserves. The modifications were split in two phases, in order to allow Tordis to continue to produce from the field.
Phase 1 of the project included modifying the GF-C platform to change to low-pressure production. Phase 2 consisted of constructing and installing the world's first full-scale subsea separation station. The subsea separation and injection facility is 62 feet (19 meters) high, 131 feet (40 meters) long, 82 feet (25 meters) wide and weighs 1,250 tons (1,134 tonnes).
The subsea facility separates water and sand from a wellstream on the seabed before the products are transported to the GF-C platform. Separated water and sand are injected from the subsea installation into an underground saline aquifer and stored. By doing this, the platform saves energy by not transporting sand and water to the platform. Oil from Tordis is sent to the GF-C platform for processing and storage, and then it is exported.
Modifications to the existing infrastructure on the Tordis field increased production by an additional 35 million barrels of oil.
Gullveig
The Gullveig field is located on Block 34/10, 7 miles (11 kilometers) west of Gullfaks. Gullveig was developed as a subsea template and is tied-back by a flowline to the GF-A platform. The field began producing October 10, 1998.
Gullfaks South
Gullfaks South is located on Blocks 34/10 and 33/12, in 427 to 722 feet (130 to 220 meters) of water. The satellite field was developed in two phases.
The first phase of development encompassed eight subsea installations, tied-back to the GF-A platform for processing, storage and loading. Producing oil and condensate, and re-injecting associated gas, this phase was approved in 1996 and commenced production in 1998.
Focusing on the production of gas and associated liquids, the second phase of development included subsea wells tied-back to both GF-A and GF-C. This phase was approved in 1998 and commenced production in 2001.
Gimle
Gimle lies between the Gullfaks and Visund fields in the Tampen area of the North Sea. The field, formerly called Topas, was found through a 24,278-foot (7,400-meter) well drilled from the GF-C platform in 2004.
Gimle is tied-back to the GF-C platform and commenced production December 2004. The field produced roughly 2 million barrels of oil during its pilot production phase. In 2006, two new wells, and a water injector well were drilled to increase the field's recoverable reserves of 25 million barrels of oil and 35 Bcf/d (1 Bcm/d).
When the field was discovered, Gimle was owned and operated by a different partnership than that of Gullfaks. The companies signed a unitization contract to develop the field through Gullfaks facilities. Statoil serves as the operator of the field, with partners Petoro and ConocoPhillips.
Visund
Visund is an oil and gas field located on Blocks 34/7 and 34/8, 14 miles (22 kilometers) northeast of the Gullfaks field. The satellite field was developed by 21 wells which are tied-back to a semisubmersible drilling, production and quarters platform. Oil is exported to Gulfaks A for storage and export with the associated gas being re-injected back into the reservoir to increase oil production.
The field commenced production in 1999. In 2004, the GF-A platform was equipped to export up to 15 MMcf/d natural gas. Gas delivery on the Visund field commenced Oct. 1, 2005. Visund gas export entails transporting the field's gas through a new pipeline to the Kvitebjorn pipeline for further transport to the land-based Kollsnes gas treatment center west of Bergen. The gas will be treated in Kollsnes' NGL facility and then transported to market through existing pipelines.
Titan
Titan, a small oil discovery made on June 23, 2009, is directly east of northern Visund in the Tampen area of the Norwegian North Sea. The discovery was made by exploration wells 34/8-13A and 34/8-13S that were drilled in a structurally complex area. Well 13A found a small oil column in Upper Jurassic sands, the underlying Brent group proved to be an aquifer. Well 13S found oil in the Brent group. The wells were drilled by the Scarabeo 5 semisub in a water depth of 1,250 feet (381 meters).
The Titan discovery will be tied-in to the Visund field, if proven commercially viable.
Visund North
Visund North is a subsea satellite field developed 6 miles (10 kilometers) from the Visund platform. The satellite field was developed by two wells tied-back to the nearby platform. Production from Visund Nord commenced in January 2002.
Skinfaks/Rimfaks
Located on Block 34/10, the Skinfaks field was discovered in 2002, and approved for operation in February 2005. Field development of Skinfaks includes eight production wells that are tied into xmas trees located on the Gullfaks South satellite field. The development is then tied-back to the GF-C platform. Production from Skinfaks began Jan. 27, 2007.
Rimfaks, located on Block 34/10, was developed as a satellite field with the well stream tied-back to the GF-C platform. Production on Rimfaks commenced Feb. 7, 1999.
Recoverable reserves from the two fields contribute to 12% of the total production of the Gullfaks project.

The trees will incorporate Aker's most advanced subsea technology which will facilitate oil and gas production at a more efficient level and allow greater recovery of reservoir data. | Statoil has awarded Framo Engineering a contract for the design and construction of the Gullfaks subsea gas compression plant. The operator said that Gullfaks may become one of the first installations worldwide to employ subsea gas compression. The mature Gullfaks field is experiencing a decline in natural reservoir pressure, so the field may need boosting in the form of compression in order to produce more gas and bring the gas up to the platform. In 2011, Statoil and partner Petoro decided to choose a subsea solution as the preferred concept for gas compression some nine miles (15 kilometers) from the Gullfaks C platform. This may increase the production from the field by 3 billion cubic meters of gas, enabling Gullfaks to sustain plateau production for gas export. The current recovery rate on the field is 62 percent. A combination of subsea compression and conventional low-pressure production in a later phase may increase this to 74 percent. This is the first delivery by Framo Engineering to Statoil within engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of subsea compression facilities. Contracts for platform modifications and marine operations in connection with the Gullfaks development will be awarded during the summer/autumn of 2012, subject to a positive investment decision. |

| Statoil has made a third discovery in an exploration and a sidetrack well near Gullfaks South in the Greater Gullfaks area. The wells were intended to determine petroleum in Middle Jurassic reservoir rocks of the Brent group, and if communication exists with the producing structures in Gullfaks South. Oil-and gas-bearing intervals were observed in the upper part of the Brent group along both well paths, stated Statoil. The wells proved a column of about 394 feet (120 meters) thick with good reservoir quality. Hydrocarbons were not found in the lower Brent group of the well. A formation test was not performed, but data was collected and cores were taken to determine the hydrocarbon system and contacts. The Deepsea Atlantic semisub drilled wells 34/10-52 A and B. Preliminary calculations indicate that 3 to 9.5 MMbbl of recoverable oil equivalent are present. The operator will now connect the wells to existing infrastructure in the Gullfaks area. | Statoil has received consent to upgrade the water injection system on the Gullfaks B platform, because the main components on the existing system are vulnerable to degeneration, stated the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway in a press release. One of the main objectives of the modification is to increase the capacity of the water injection system from the current level of 35,000 MMcm/d to 70,000 MMcm/d. In addition, a new power cable will be installed between Gullfaks A and Gullfaks B. According to the plan, the work is scheduled for completion in 2013. | Statoil Says a Well Incident Occurred on DeepSea Atlantic |

| Statoil has reported that a well incident took place on the Deepsea Atlantic on Thursday night, February 9. The rig is conducing operations on the Gullfaks South field, where it is about to complete operations in connection with the gas and condensate discovery in well 34/10-53. Normalization efforts on the rig commenced a half-hour later and the situation was quickly clarified. Work on the well has resumed, and the incident was reported to the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway. Statoil stated that when the BOP was opened and mud circulated, gas was registered in the mud processing unit on the platform. The well control system was immediately closed. The gas in the well circulated in a controlled manner and both well barriers were reestablished. Statoil is currently determining the cause of the incident. The PSA has not identified any matters beyond those described in the investigation report, which makes recommendations for measures to rectify identified faults and impairments, and prevent similar incidents from occurring again.
