The drilling rig arrived on location in November 2008 and commenced appraisal drilling, confirming the prospect as one of the largest natural gas discoveries offshore China.

On May 12, 2009, Husky announced the West Hercules completed drilling and testing of the second appraisal well, Liwan 3-1-3. Situated in a water depth of 4,757 feet (1,450 meters), the well reached a total depth of 12,100 feet (3,688 meters) below sea level. After completing the appraisal well, West Hercules spud a second well on the block, which flowed at a restricted rate of 52 MMcf/d.

The Liwan Central Platform jacket is located in 650 feet of water making it the largest conventional steel jacket outside of the Gulf of Mexico. In April 2013, the topsides was completed and started the journey to the Liwan field. First gas is anticipated for late 2013.

Husky Successfully Appraises Liuhua Field
Type: Appraisal Operations

Oct. 2010 - Husky Energy has completed appraisal drilling at the Liuhua 29-1 discovery on Block 29/26 in the South China Sea. Drilled by the West Hercules semisub, the Liuhua 29-1-3 well reached a total vertical depth of 9,514 feet (2,900 meters). After encountering about 197 feet (60 meters) of gas pay, the well has been cased for possible reentry as a producing well. The Liuhua 29-1-3 well shows the field extends to the north and is capable of achieving high flow rates, stated Husky. Once the well data is integrated, additional appraisal drilling will be conducted to further define the resource size of the field. First gas is targeted for 2013. The Liuhua 29-1 field is located on Block 29/26 in the South China Sea. Husky serves as the operator of the block, holding a 49% interest.

Husky Completes First Appraisal Well on Liuhua 29-1
Type: Appraisal Operations

Jun. 2010 - Husky completed drilling and testing of the first appraisal well on the Liuhua 29-1 field. Drilled by the West Hercules semisub, the well reached a total vertical depth of 9,613 feet (2,930 meters) in a water depth of 2,510 feet (765 meters). The appraisal well tested natural gas at a restricted rate of 55 MMcf/d, indicating the well could potentially deliver 60 to 70 MMcf/d of gas. Further appraisal drilling will be conducted later this year to increase the understanding of the recoverable resource and to provide a better understanding of the reservoir in order to plan a development for the field. The Liuhua 29-1 field is located on Block 29/26 in the South China Sea. Husky serves as the operator of the block, holding a 49% interest.

Husky Completes Triple Play With Another South China Gas Find

Feb. 2010 - Husky Oil made a third gas discovery on Block 29/26 in the South China Sea. Drilled by the West Hercules semisub in a water depth of 2,362 feet (720 meters), the Liuhua 29-1 exploration well encountered a gross gas column of 476 feet (145 meters), with a significant thickness of a high-quality gas charged reservoir, as well as an oil zone in a deeper part of the reservoir. In well tests performed, Liuhua 29-1 flowed natural gas at an equipment-restricted rate of 57 MMcf/d, indicating the well could exceed production rates of 90 MMcf/d. The Liuhua 29-1 discovery will be further appraised later in the year, and once appraised, the operator plans to tie the field back to existing infrastructure on the Liwan field. Husky Energy holds serves as the operator, holding a 49% interest; CNOOC holds the remaining 51%.

The well has similar characteristics as the Liwan 3-1 well, another gas discovery made by Husky Energy, which is located 14 miles (23 kilometers) northeast in a water depth of 3,757 feet (1,145 meters). A FEED is being implemented for the Liwan 3-1 field development project and the LH 34-2 field will be tied into the field's facility. A planned field development will be submitted to authorities in 2010 and first gas production is scheduled in 2013.

Husky to Submit Devt Plan for South China Sea Gas Field
Type: Status Update

Aug. 2009 - Husky Energy reported it will submit a development plan for its Liwan 3-1 gas field in the South China Sea late this year or early 2010 after encouraging drilling results. Husky said its third appraisal well on the Liwan discovery flowed at a restricted rate of 52 MMcf/d, bolstering expectations it will ultimately produce three times as much gas. The flow rate was in line with two previous appraisal wells drilled in February and May, Husky said. The data are important for the front-end engineering design, or FEED, which is currently underway. Recoverable natural gas reserves at the Liwan field were estimated at 4 trillion to 6 trillion cubic feet when it was discovered in June 2006, making it China's largest offshore gas find to date.
