BP and Shell partnered in this $1.5 billion joint venture project.
BP is the production operator of the host facility and satellite subsea fields. Shell developed the project and was responsible for the design, fabrication and installation of the floating host facility and subsea production system. Shell also developed the 12 wells. BP, as production operator for the project, runs the host facility and the satellite subsea fields. DSI commissioning team worked on the high-priority tasks of securing the platform.
Na Kika is named after the Polynesian Octopus God. The facility resembles an octopus with the head being a subsea host platform that is connected via pipeline "legs" to its six dispersed subsea fields in different directions.
Production from the first gas well is estimated at 100 million cubic feet per day; production increased as additional wells came online. Na Kika commenced production in November 2003. During peak production, the Na Kika facility is expected to produce 110,000 barrels of oil per day.
Building Na Kika
This centrally located floating development consists of four modules with a combined weight of 40,000 tons (36,287 tonnes). A drilling module doesn’t exist on the facility, since all of the development wells are satellite subsea wells tied back with flow lines.
The facility has four square steel columns, 56 feet wide (17 meters wide) and 142 feet high (43 meters high), connected by four rectangular steel pontoons. The topside facilities measure 335 feet (102 meters) by 290 feet (88 meters), with a 130-foot (40-meter) by 120-foot (37-meter) central opening. The platform mooring system is comprised of chain, wire ropes and suction piles that process oil and gas from 12 satellite subsea wells.
There are separate dehydration and treatment facilities designed to process 425 million cubic feet of gas (12 cubic meters of gas) and 110,000 barrels of oil per day. One hundred fifty miles of pipeline transport processed oil and gas from Na Kika to market, stopping first at Main Pass then brought to shore by the Okeanos Gas Gathering System. The pipeline system was built by Shell but is operated by BP.
Industry Recognition
In 2004, BP and Shell were awarded the OTC Distinguished Award for outstanding application in the design, construction and installation of the Na Kika floating development system in ultra-deep depths over 6,350 feet of water (1,935 meters.)
Fields
During development operations, the Transocean Marianas drilled the first of five wells during September 2001 to June 2002. The independent wells, in water depths that range from 5,800 to 7,750 (1,768 to 2,300 meters) feet of water, are tied back to a centrally located, permanently moored, floating development and production host facility. All the wells are connected to the central host and also to each other.
This is the first time a central host has been used for the development of dispersed fields. Without this system, it would have not been economically viable to produce from these fields because of their size.
The Kepler field is located on Mississippi Canyon Block 383 in a water depth of 5,800 feet (1,768 meters). Kepler was developed by two wells and is located 10 miles (16 kilometers) from Na Kika. The oil field was discovered in 1987 and came online in the second quarter of 2004.
Located on Mississippi Canyon Block 429, the Ariel field is in a water depth of 6,200 feet (1,890 meters). Ariel was developed by three wells and is situated five miles (eight kilometers) from Na Kika. The oil field was discovered in 1995 and commenced production in the second quarter of 2004.
The East Anstey field, located on Mississippi Canyon Block 607, is in a water depth of 6,650 feet (2,027 meters). East Anstey was developed by one well and is located 10 miles (16 kilometers) from Na Kika. The gas field was discovered in 1997 and commenced production Nov. 26, 2003.
Hershel, discovered in 1996, is located on Mississippi Canyon Block 520. Hershel was developed by one well and is located nine miles (14 kilometers) from Na Kika. The oil field is in a water depth of 6,800 feet (2,073 meters) and came online in December 2003.
The Fourier gas field is located on Mississippi Canyon Block 522 in a water depth of 7,000 feet (2,137 meters). It was developed by three wells and is located 12 miles (19 kilometers) from Na Kika. Fourier was discovered in 1989 and commenced production Nov. 26, 2003.
Coulomb is located on Mississippi Canyon Block 657 in a water depth of 2,362 meters. The field was developed by two wells and is located 25 miles (40 kilometers) from Na Kika. Coulomb was discovered in 1987 and commenced production in 2005.
Further Development
In 2007, the Isabela prospect was discovered by Transocean's Deepwater Horizon semisub on Mississippi Canyon 562 in the Gulf of Mexico. Isabela is located 150 miles (241 kilometers) southeast of New Orleans in 6,500 feet (1,981 meters) of water. BP serves as the operator of the field and holds a 66.67% interest; Noble Energy holds the remaining 33.33% interest.
On Feb. 28, 2007, the discovery well was drilled to a true vertical depth of 19,100 feet (5,822 meters) and encountered hydrocarbons in two high-quality reservoirs.
In 2009, BP announced plans to develop three fields, Isabela, Santa Cruz and Santiago, known as the Galapagos development. In September 2009, Technip was awarded a lump sum contract by BP for the Isabela project in the Gulf of Mexico. The project is a subsea tie-back to the Na Kika semisub. The contract covered project management, engineering, fabrication and installation of pipe-in-pipe flowlines, steel cantenary risers and subsea equipment.
This phase of development commenced production on June 12, 2012.
In March 2010, BP awarded Subsea 7 an installation contract for the Galapagos and Na Kika Phase 3 developments. Engineering work will start immediately, and installation will take place late 2010 using Subsea 7's pipelay and construction vessel.
