The discovery well, 42/13-2, drilled on July 12, 1997, encountered gas. The well tested at a rate of 3 MMcf/d, demonstrating the potential for movable hydrocarbons. An earlier well, 42/13-1, drilled by BP in 1968, located to the east of the 42/13-2 well, encountered 43 feet (13 meters) of wet Scremerston Sandstone, but was not deemed commercially viable.

The data from this well was used as a guideline when the operator explored the area and drilled a third well, appraisal well 42/13-3. This well was drilled using an oil based mud system to avoid the formation damage experienced in the discovery well. The well, 42/13-3, flowed successfully at a rate of 17.6 MMcf/d, giving the operator encouragement to continue to appraise the area.

In August 2008, the ENSCO 70 jackup was contracted to drill two additional appraisal wells on the Breagh field. The jackup stayed on location until January 2009.

In 2010, an appraisal well, 42/13a-6 on the Breagh field, found gas and was completed as a producer. The well was drilled to a measured depth of 8,624 feet (2,629 meters) and open-hole logs indicated 62 feet (19 meters) of net gas bearing sands.

Field Development

The operator is developing the gas field in multiple phases. Phase 1 development comprises a platform on the western side of the field from which 10 wells will be drilled, the installation of a 62-mile (100-kilometer), 20-inch-diameter gas export pipeline to Teeside, together with an associated smaller pipeline and cable, and the installation of an onshore pipeline to the Teeside Gas processing plant.

Sail-out and installation occurred in October 2011, with onshore pipeline operations expected to commence later in the year.

The operator hopes to achieve peak, full field 2P production for Phase 1 in 2015 at 167 MMcf/d, as estimated by the company's independent reserves evaluator RPS Energy.

Phase II

Phase II of the Breagh development is currently being considered, but the operator is leaning towards installing a second platform with further wells on the eastern side of the field. These wells will connect to the Breagh Bravo platform and then tied-back to Breagh Alpha platform. Phase 2 development is expected to commence in 2013, and peak, full field 2P sales gas production is expected in 2016 at 186 MMcf/d.

Development Drilling Continues at Breagh
Type: Development Activity

Mar. 2013 - According to Sterling Resources, well 42/13a-A4 has been completed by the ENSCO 70 (250' ILC). A net pay column of 89 feet (27 meters) was encountered which is 15 feet (5 meters) more than what was expected. The rig has already spudded well 42/13a-5A which is the fifth well in the development program. Three wells are expected to be available for first production in May 2013 with the fourth and fifth to be brought online in June. Average gross production for the second half of 2013 is expected to be approximately 150 MMcfd. A second phase of development has been under consideration and a decision is expected to be made late in2Q2013 with governmental approval to follow in 4Q 2013.

Breagh Production Test Update
Type: Development Activity

Dec. 2012 - Production testing has been completed on three initial development wells at the Breagh field in the UK North Sea. Results from the tests are in-line with reservoir stimulation models run by development partners RWE Dea and Sterling Resources. Once normalized to reflect expected the sales level of wellhead pressure, the current three well capacity is estimated at 88 Mmscfd. The newly drilled A3 well is the most prolific producer with a flow rate of 58 Mmscfd under initial production conditions. Performance of the development wells is being monitored so that future production can be optimized. Five wells are expected to be available by early May 2013 with an estimated total production capacity of 150 Mmscfd.

More Delays for Breagh
Type: Operator Update

Oct. 2012 - Sterling Resources announced a delay in production start-up at the Breagh field in the UK North Sea. Late design completion, rework of certain systems and late material deliveries combined to cause construction delays which have pushed the anticipated start-up date to the end of 1Q 2013. Breagh Phase 1 development costs have risen to $825 million which is 1.4 percent above initial estimates. Development drilling at the field has not been hampered by the construction delays. The first three wells will be flow-tested before the end of the year. A fourth well is expected to come on stream once field production is established.
