Snorre

Snorre is a large oil field located on Norwegian Blocks 34/4 and 34/7 in the Tampen area of the North Sea in water depths of 984 to 1,148 feet (300 to 350 meters). Statoil serves as the operator of the field with 33.3%. Partners include Petoro with 30% interest, ExxonMobil Norge with 11.58%, Idemitsu Petroleum with 9.6%, RWE-Dea Norge with 8.28%, Total E&P Norge with 6.17% and Amerada Hess Norge with the remaining 1.03%.

Snorre's reservoir contains sandstones in the Statfjord and Lunde formations, which are early Jurassic and Triassic in age, at a depth of 6,562 to 8,858 feet (2,000 to 2,700 meters). The field has recoverable reserves estimated at 1,400 MMbo, 210 Bcf and 6 million tons (5.4 million tones) of natural gas liquids.

Water injection, gas injection and water alternating gas injection (WAG), as well as foam-assisted injections were used to boost recovery.

Field Development

Phase 1

The Snorre field was developed in two phases. The first phase of development consisted of installing a drilling, production and accommodation rig, Snorre A TLP, and the installation of a subsea production system tied-back to the platform.

The development of the Snorre field consisted of drilling 46 oil wells. Six of these wells were predrilled prior to installing the TLP; and 30 wells were drilled after production commenced. The subsea station, Snorre UPA, drilled the remaining 10 wells.

The subsea production system, Snorre UPA, is located 4 miles (6 kilometers) from Snorre A. In the middle of the subsea production system is the template, which consists of two rows of five bays on either side and each bay holds two wells. The manifold is also located in the middle, which consists of pipes flowing to and from the wells.

With a displacement of 106,500 tons (96,615 tonnes), the Snorre A TLP has 44 well slots and accommodates up to 36 production and injection risers. Each well is tied-back to the risers, which run from the subsea wellhead on the seafloor to the xmas trees in the platform's well bay.

The TLP, which came online in 1992, receives production from the Snorre field and the Vigdis and Vigdis extension satellite fields. The TLP produces roughly 270,000 bopd, which is transported to Statfjord A platform on the Statfjord field nearby, for final processing. The oil is then exported into shuttle tankers, while gas is transported to Europe through the Statpipe/Norpipe system.

Phase 2

Phase 2 of development included installing Snorre B semisub platform and four subsea templates, as well as drilling 10 wells.

A semisubmersible integrated drilling, processing and accommodation facility, Snorre B is located on the northern part of the Snorre field, roughly four miles (seven kilometers) north of the Snorre A platform.

Snorre B came online in June 2001, and at peak, it produced 113,000 bopd. Produced oil from Snorre B is transported via a 28-mile (45-kilometer) pipeline to Statfjord B for storage and export. Produced gas is transported by pipeline to the Statpipe/Norpipe system, and a portion of the gas is re-injected into the reservoir.

Vigdis Satellite Field

The Vidgis field is located on UK Block 34/7 in the Tampen area. StatoilHydro operates the field and owns 41.5% interest; Petoro owns 30%; ExxonMobil Norway owns 10.5%; Idemistu Petroleum Norge owns 9.6%; Total E&P Norge owns 5.6%; and RWE Dea Norge owns the remaining 2.8%.

Developed as a subsea satellite in two phases, Vigdis consists of three subsea templates: the main structure, which came on stream in 1997; the Borg North-West, which started production in 2003; and the Vigdis East, which began producing in 2004. The subsea development is tied-back to the Snorre A platform 4 miles (7 kilometers) away.

Since it began production, Vigdis has sent approximately 60,000 bopd to the Snorre A platform for processing. Oil is then transported via pipeline to the Gullfaks A facility nearby for storage and export. Gas from the main Vigdis structure is injected into the Snorre field, while gas from Borg North-West and Vigdis East is piped from Snorre A by the Statpipe/Norpipe system.

Vigdis Extension

A small satellite field, the Vigdis Extension is situated between the Vigdis and Tordis fields in the Tampen area of the UK North Sea. Expected to produce some 50 MMbo at a rate of 45,000 bopd, the Vigdis Extension field development is completely subsea, connected to the existing subsea structure on Vigdis.

The field was developed by a subsea unit consisting of three production and three injection wells linked to an existing seabed installation on the Vigdis field. Production commenced in December 2003.
