Discovered in 1997, the Dalia oil field is located 84 miles (135 kilometers) offshore Angola in Block 17 in a water depth of 4,921 feet (1,500 meters). The field holds an estimated 1 billion barrels of recoverable reserves.
Total serves as the operator with 40% interest. Esso Exploration Angola holds 20%, BP holds 16.67%, Statoil holds 23.33%.

Subsea System
Pride International’s drillships the Pride Africa and Pride Angola drilled the Dalia wells. A total of 71 wells make up the subsea production system: 38 production wells, 30 water injection wells, and three gas injection wells. In addition, the system includes 67 xmas trees to control the well stream, nine manifolds, two work-over systems, connection systems and control equipment. Production flowlines are linked to eight flexible risers specially manufactured for the project, which transport the fluid to Dalia’s FPSO vessel. The development of the Dalia project cost an estimated $3.4 billion.
Most of the production wells are single and near horizontal, and a drill through horizontal Xmas tree sits atop each well. Nine umbilicals remotely control the xmas trees and manifolds. The manifolds have large and small bore piping and valves to manage production, hydraulic control and chemical injections. The project uses four 12-inch-diameter pipe-in-pipe production loops to transport oil to the FPSO.
Eight flexible risers, using Integrated Production Bundle (IPB) technology, carry fluid to the surface facilities. The flexible risers make it possible to monitor the field’s behavior in real-time, to inject gas to facilitate the production of oil, and to ensure the proper flow of the oil as it is brought up.
Dalia FPSO
One of the largest FPSO vessels to date, the Dalia FPSO measures 984 feet (300 meters) by 197 feet (60 meters) and weighs 85,000 tons (77,111 tonnes). It processes 240,000 bopd and has a storage capacity of 2 million barrels. The living quarters of the FPSO includes a main control room, from which all of its systems are monitored, and living space for up to 190 people.
The vessel is moored by a 12-point chain linked to 106-ton (96-tonne) suction anchors that are attached to the vessel by a 394 foot (120 meter) sheathed cable with a length of chain at either end that is 2,133 feet (650 meters) at the seabed and 656 feet (200 meters) at the surface.
In January 2004, Total commissioned Samsung Heavy Industry to fabricate the FPSO Dalia’s hull in South Korea. Construction began that month, and the hull was completed the following August.
Production
Brought online in December 2006, oil is produced from the giant field’s three main reservoirs, along with the adjacent Camellia reservoir. Production rates were 200,000 bopd within four months of production start-up, reaching peak production of 240,000 barrels very soon afterward. It is estimated the field will produce up to 2.5 million barrels per day in 2011.
