Project Description
The first deepwater oil discovery in Malaysia, Kikeh is located in 4,400 feet (1,341 meters) of water offshore Sabah, northwest of the island of Labuan, in the southern part of Block K. Considered a fast-paced project, field development was completed in five years following the initial discovery in July 2002, and production started in August 2007.

Murphy Oil's Asian subsidiary serves as the operator of Kikeh with 80% interest in the field. Petronas, the state-owned Malaysian petroleum company, holds the remaining 20%.

Appraisal Drilling

Initial exploration resulted in two dry holes, Bagang and Bliais, but the Kikeh well was a significant oil discovery intersecting several hundred feet of high-quality oil reservoirs. Numerous appraisal wells were then drilled to delineate the well, proving that the field was interconnected, and leading experts to predict recoverable reserves of 400 to 700 million barrels of oil. Kikeh oil is a light sweet crude with an API of 34.91 degrees.

Additionally, the Kikeh Kecil well, drilled 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) north of the Kikeh field, discovered the same reservoirs as Kikeh with no water levels. A drill stem test of the Kikeh No. 4 well proved a positive daily flow rate, and the Kikeh No. 5 well proved a new fault block within the field.

Field Development

The $1.5 billion field development plan included both a spar and FPSO on the field, as well as 25 subsea and dry tree wells. The project received governmental approval in September 2004, and construction began soon afterward.

Technip was awarded the engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning contract for the spar, capable of producing from 25 wells. The unit also hosts a tender assisted drilling rig for development drilling. The contract also includes the spar hull, topsides, subsea pipeline, and drilling and production riser system. This was the first spar installed outside the Gulf of Mexico.

Malaysia International Shipping Corp. was awarded the contract for the turret-moored FPSO, which included the charter of the vessel and the operation and maintenance work. Single Buoy Moorings served as a technical partner in the project. A conversion from a tanker built in 1974, the Kikeh FPSO boasts a processing capability of 120,000 bopd, as well as a storage capacity of 1.5 million barrels of oil. The vessel includes high-capacity water and gas treatment facilities with related reinjection plants with a water injection rate of 260,000 bwpd and a gas compression rate of 150 MMcf/d.

NKT Flexibles provided the mid-water FTL GAP deepwater fluid transfer system connecting the Kikeh spar with the FPSO. The system comprises a horizontal rigid bundle of flowlines that is tensioned 500 feet (150 meters) below the surface of the water.

Production

Production commenced from Kikeh with an initial daily production rate of 40,000 bopd. A considerable amount of development drilling was conducted by the Ocean Rover semisub from 2006 to 2008. These wells were placed on stream throughout this time period, hiking daily production to 120,000 bopd.

Satellite Field

Siakap North

The Siakap North field is located on Block K offshore Sabah, Malaysia in 4,300 feet (1,311 meters) of water. Serving as operator of the field is Murphy Oil, holding an 80% interest; Petronas holds the other 20% stake.

Discovered in June 2009 by the Ocean Rover semisub, the well hit oil-bearing pay sands of a similar age and quality as the nearby Kikeh field. A month later, the Siakap North-2 well was drilled, also resulting in an oil discovery. Subsequently, a third and fourth appraisal well were drilled, confirming the field as a commercial discovery.

The field will be tied-back to the Kikeh FPSO.

McDermott to Provide Subsea Infrastructure for Siakap North Development
Type: Subsea Equipment

May. 2012 - McDermott has received a subsea contract to execute a deepwater engineering, procurement, construction, transportation, installation and commissioning project offshore Malaysia. The award is for the subsea infrastructure of the Siakap North - Petai ("SNP") development project operated by Murphy Sabah Oil Co., comprising rigid flowlines, flexible risers, an umbilical and subsea hardware and controls. The SNP field is located nearby the existing Kikeh field, northwest of Labuan Island, Malaysia, in waters measuring 3,900 to 4,900 feet (1,189 to 1,494 meters) deep. The SNP field architecture consists of two rigid, insulated, pipe-in-pipe production flowlines, one rigid water injection flowline and one main umbilical system connecting eight new manifolds and subsea distribution units to existing riser slots on the Kikeh FPSO. The development calls for five water injection and eight production wells, drilled from the manifolds at each of the four drill center locations. The project scope is scheduled to be completed by the third quarter of 2013.

Aker to Provide Subsea Production System for the Siakap North Project
Type: Subsea Equipment

May. 2012 - Murphy Sabah Oil has awarded Aker Solutions a contract for the delivery of a subsea production system for the Siakap North project. The scope of work includes 13 subsea trees, eight manifolds, well jumpers, engineering for topside controls and life cycle support services. The first hardware delivery is slated for 1Q 2013. The subsea production system will be tied-back to Murphy's Kikeh FPSO.
