Project Description
The Clipper field was discovered on Oct. 13, 2005, on Green Canyon Block 299 and 300 in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. In 2006, Pioneer Natural Resources, which discovered the prospect, drilled two appraisal wells and began evaluating the field for development.

Pioneer decided to sell the project after projected capital costs doubled when the field evaluation began. In 2008, ATP Oil & Gas acquired 55% working interest of GC 299, and it now serves as the operator of the project. The company wholly owns and operates GC 300 Block.

Located in 3,400 feet (1,036 meters) of water, Clipper had four wells drilled in 2005 and 2006, which logged hyrdrocarbons, but they weren't developed. When ATP acquired the field, the company hired the Diamond Ocean Victory semisub to complete and sidetrack a third well, then complete a fourth well to tie-back to an existing infrastructure.

Field Development

With Bluewater Industries serviing as the project manager, Clipper is being developed as a subsea tie-back to the Front Runner spar.

In May 2009, Bluewater Industries awarded a contract to Technip for subsea services on the Clipper field. Technip's scope of work includes the design and fabrication of two HP flexible risers; installation engineering and welding of one pipe-in-pipe oil production flowline; installation of the flowlines, risers and umbilical; fabrication and installation of four subsea structures and associated jumpers and flying leads; and pre-commissioning. Installation, using the Deep Blue deepwater pipelay vessel, occurred in the second quarter of 2010.

Currently, the operator is developing the wells on the field with hopes to commence first oil in 2012.

ATP to Bring Clipper Online in 2012
Type: Status Update

May. 2012 - ATP reports that two wells at the Clipper field are on schedule to begin production in late 3Q or 4Q 2012. Both wells were drilled and completed in 2011, and ATP has begun preparatory work for the installation of the Clipper pipeline during 3Q 2012.

ATP Succesfully Tests Clipper Well
Type: Development Activity

Dec. 2011 - ATP has successfully completed and tested the second Clipper well on the field in the deepwater GOM, which flowed at rates of 9,000 Bbls per day and 4.6 MMcf/d. This well, combined with the first Clipper well, brings the total test rates to about 13.7 MBbls of oil per day and 50.2 MMcf/d of natural gas or 22 MBbls equivalent per day. The well logged about 56 feet (17 meters) of net oil pay, confirming reserves previously booked. ATP has hired a pipeline lay barge for the Clipper wells until 3Q 12, and will tie-in both the GC 300 No. 4 and No. 2 wells to the Murphy Oil-operated Front Runner production facility. Clipper No. 4 is located at Green Canyon Block 300, and resides in 3,450 feet (1,052 meters) of water. ATP operates Green Canyon block 300 with a 55 percent working interest.

ATP's Clipper Development Ops Continue
Type: Development Activity

Nov. 2011 - ATP said that operations are continuing at the second Clipper well, No. 4, at Green Canyon Block 300. The operator said it has encountered oil pay sands, specifically, 56 feet (17 meters) of logged net oil pay, confirming already booked reserves. Completion operations are underway at the well. Production at the field is still scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2012. ATP operates Green Canyon block 300 with a 55 percent working interest.

ATP Develops Clipper Field, Looks to 2012 for First Oil
Type: Development Activity

Aug. 2011 - ATP O&G stated it commenced well operations with the Diamond Ocean Victory semisub on the Clipper field (No. 2 well, Sidetrack No. 1), located on Green Canyon Block 300, during the second quarter of 2011. In July, after completing the well, it flowed at a rate of 45.6 MMcf/d plus condensate of 4,656 barrels per day. The well is scheduled to be placed on production in the middle of 2012 after completing construction of a pipeline and connecting the well to existing infrastructure. After completing the well, the semisub will move to the GC No. 4 well, re-enter and sidetrack it to the targeted oil zone. All required permit applications were submitted to BOEMRE, stated the company. ATP wholly owns and operates the Clipper field.

ATP Gets Go-Ahead to Complete Drilling on Clipper Field
Type: Operator Update

Apr. 2011 - ATP received a permit to complete a previously drilled No. 2 well at Green Canyon block 300 on the Clipper field in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. The well, located in 3,454 feet (1,053 meters) of water, was sidetracked, encountering a gas reservoir between 15,590 and 15,721 feet (4,752 and 4,792 meters) total vertical depth in 2006. ATP plans to commence well operations using the Ocean Victory semisub in 2011. ATP operates Green Canyon block 300 with a 55% working interest.

ATP Furthers Development Activity at Clipper
Type: Development Activity

Dec. 2009 - ATP Oil and Gas Corporation has submitted a Development Operations Coordination Document (DOCD) to MMS for its Clipper development project. The DOCD proposes to sidetrack and complete well No. SS002 at Green Canyon Block 299 (BH-GC300). The plan also covers installation of the lease term pipeline and production startup of subsea well No. 004. Clipper is currently under development as a subsea tie-back to the Front Runner Platform at GC 338.
