The largest discovery, onshore or off, for Mexican state-owned company Pemex in 2008, Ayatsil is a heavy oil field located in the waters of the Campeche Sound, near the massive producer Cantarell. Expected to boost production for the country by 150,000 bopd, reserve estimates for Ayatsil put the size of the field at 553 MMbo.
Discovered in June 2008, the Ayatsil DL1 exploration well was drilled by Diamond Offshore's Ocean New Era semisub. Immediately following this discovery, the Ocean New Era then drilled the Tekel-1 exploration well nearby the Ayatsil field in 410 feet (125 meters) of water. Tekel-1 resulted in another heavy oil discovery, confirming Ayatsil as a promising development. The Tekel-1 well is expected to enhance the Ayatsil field with an additional 100 MMbo, as well as gas reserves.
While field development plans have not been made public, in June 2009, Reuters reported that Pemex would soon tender bids for companies interested in fabricating the platforms that will develop the Ayatsil field. Additional reports suggest that the company might hire an FPSO to produce the heavy oil reserves at Ayatsil.
The Ayatsil heavy oil field is expected to supplement waning Mexican production from the massive Cantarell and Ku Maloob Zaap.
