Description

The Cliff Head oil field is located in Commonwealth exploration permit WA-286-P, approximately 11 kilometers off the western Australian coastline in 52 feet (16 meters) of water. Considered the first commercial oil development in the offshore Perth Basin, Cliff Head holds an estimated 17 million barrels of proven and probable reserves. Serving as operator of the license is Roc Oil, holding a 37.5% interest; other partners in the permit include AWE (57.5%); Itochu (5%).

Discovered in 2001 by the ENSCO 56 jackup, the Cliff Head-1well found a 5-meter oil column in the primary Permian reservoir objective. The field was then appraised by three wells between 2002 and 2005, confirming the commercial potential of the field. A final investment decision was made by the Cliff Head joint venture in March 2005.

Field Development

At a development cost of US $327 million, the Cliff Head project consists of eight production and two water injection wells connecting to an offshore wellhead platform linked to an onshore processing plant by two 9-mile (14-kilometer) pipelines – one for production fluid and the other as a return line for water injection.

The installation of the offshore pipeline and associated umbilicals was completed in November 2005; and the offshore platform jacket was installed in December 2005.

Commencing production on May 1, 2006, the field produces about 4,431 bopd. Processed oil is sent to BP's oil refinery at Kwinana.

Further Exploration

The area surrounding Cliff Head has been further explored, leading to two discoveries in mid-2007: the Frankland-1 well, a modest gas discovery, and Dunsborough-1 well, an oil discovery. However, appraisal drilling on both wells failed to encounter significant pay. The operator acquired a 134, 919 acre (546 square kilometer) survey over these discoveries to assist in further exploration potential.

Activities

Cliff Head Produces at Higher Rates following Field Maintenance
Date: Jan. 2012
Type: Status Update
Gross oil production at the Cliff Head oil field averaged 3,953 bopd for 4Q 2011. AWE said production remains at higher levels following the successful installation of a higher volume pump in the CH-12 well. Further field optimization studies are being undertaken.
Roc Oil Resumes Production from Cliff Head
Date: Mar. 2011
Type: Status Update
Roc Oil announced that production has resumed from its Cliff Head field offshore Western Australia after production was temporarily suspended on February 17. BP had identified organic chloride in Cliff Head crude that was delivered to its refinery. The contamination was related to batch chemical treatments being undertaken as part of the current Cliff Head 12 well workover. The Cliff Head oil field is located in Commonwealth exploration permit WA-286-P, approximately 7 miles (11 kilometers) off the western Australian coastline in 52 feet (16 meters) of water. Serving as operator of the license is Roc Oil, holding a 37.5% interest, other partners in the permit include AWE (57.5%); Itochu (5%).
Production Temporarily Halted at Cliff Head Field
Date: Feb. 2011
Type: Status Update
Roc Oil reported production was halted at its Cliff Head oil field February 17, following advice from BP that it had identified organic chloride in Cliff Head crude delivered to the BP refinery. Roc stated that the organic chloride may relate to batch chemical treatments being undertaken as part of the current Cliff Head 12 well workover program. The operator has since conducted a flushing program to clear the system of any potential residual organic chlorides. No environmental incidents or losses of containment have been reported because of this activity. Regulatory authorities were informed of the temporary shutdown. Prior to the suspension, Cliff Head was producing about 3,000 bopd because of the workover activity.
