Project Description
Believed to be one of the Gulf of Mexico's biggest discoveries, the Tahiti field is located in Green Canyon Blocks 596 and 640, approximately 190 miles (306 kilometers) southwest of New Orleans in 4,000 feet of water (1,219 meters). The field is being developed by (operator) Chevron with 58%, Total with 17% and StatoilHydro with 25%. To develop the field and construct the facility, it cost Chevron $3.5 billion.

In 2003, Tahiti's appraisal drilling resulted in one of the most significant net pay accumulations in the history of the Gulf of Mexico with one well encountering more than 1,000 feet (305 meters) of net pay in high-quality sandstone. The two-well appraisal program also confirmed that the reservoir in Tahiti spreads across 3 miles (5 kilometers). The appraisal wells ...

The two-well appraisal program also confirmed that the reservoir in Tahiti spreads across 3 miles (5 kilometers). The appraisal wells were drilled simultaneously using two rigs, the Glomar Explorer and the Transocean Discoverer Deep Seas, each drilling a vertical well with a sidetrack in more than 4,000 feet (1,219 meters) of water.

Field Development

The Tahiti field is developed from two subsea drill centers producing to a floating production facility supported by a truss spar. The first phase of development began in August 2005 at a cost of more than $1.8 billion. The Tahiti field is estimated to hold 400-500 MMbbl at more than 20,000 feet (6,096 meters) below the seabed. In June 2007, construction was delayed due to a metallurgical problem in the Tahiti mooring shackles.

During the first quarter of 2009, problems were eradicated and the second phase of field development is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2009. Cameron received a contract worth $83 million for the supply of subsea production systems for the field's development. The project encompasses eight subsea trees, production control systems, connection systems, engineering and project management services and related equipment.

First production from Tahiti commenced May 5, 2009. Daily production is expected to ramp up to 125,000 bopd and 70 MMcf/d (2 MMcm/d) before the end of 2009.

Tahiti Truss Spar

The Tahiti floating production truss spar is located on Green Canyon Block 641, approximately 190 miles (306 kilometers) southwest of New Orleans. It has the capacity to produce 125,000 bpd and 70 MMcf/d (2 MMcm/d) of gas and treat 120,000 bwd of produced water. The platform has oil and gas processing equipment but does not have a drilling rig or surface wellheads.

Technip was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract by Chevron to deliver the Spar hull and mooring system for Tahiti; Technip also fabricated the topsides modules.

The topsides facility is compromised of 9,950 tons (9,026 tonnes) of production module, 6,500 tons (5,897 tonnes) of utility modules and a 2,500-ton (2,268-tonne) module support frame. The Technip-designed deepwater spar hull has a 555-foot-long (169-meter-long) single steel cylinder and truss with a diameter of 128 feet (39 meters) and a steel weight of 9,200 tons (8,346 tonnes). The spar hull is a 555-foot-long (169-meter-long) single steel cylinder and truss. The topsides span across three acres with the ability to house 100 people.

J. Ray McDermott installed the infield flow lines, associated pipeline connections and Steel Catenary Risers. J. Ray installed two six-inch and four nine-inch flow lines with associated Pipeline End Terminations static flow line segments and in-line buoyancy. The Derrick Barge 50 performed the work.

Tahiti Pipeline

Amberjack Pipeline Co. LLC constructed the 55-mile deepwater crude oil pipeline that connects the Tahiti Field to the existing Amberjack pipeline in Green Canyon Block 19. The pipeline was expanded from a 20-inch diameter to a 24-inch diameter design that handles 300,000 bpd and accommodates additional discoveries in the Walker Ridge and Green Canyon areas. Chevron Pipeline Company and Shell Pipeline Company LP equally own the pipeline.

Tahiti SCR Monitoring System Proves Beneficial
Type: Subsea Equipment

Dec. 2009 - Chevron's Tahiti platform in the Gulf of Mexico has benefited from 2H's online riser monitoring system for the last six months. The system has increased accuracy and improved reliability in monitoring dynamic subsea structures. For example, the system measured wave heights up to 25 feet during Hurricane Ida at Tahiti, which proves that the system can be used to provide effective hurricane response. Success at Tahiti with the SCR may lead to increased use of this system in the industry.

Discoverer Clear Leader Drills Development Well at Tahiti
Type: Development Activity

Aug. 2009 - Chevron announced that the Discoverer Clear Leader, has begun work for Chevron in the deepwater U.S. Gulf of Mexico. The drillship will begin work at Tahiti, drilling a development well at Green Canyon block 640. Tahiti is a subsea tieback to the Tahiti Spar platform at Green Canyon 641. Production began in early May 2009 at a rate of 125,000 bopd / 70 mmcf/day.

Type: Development Activity

Jun. 2009 - Transocean's Discoverer Clear Leader drillship is slated to drill a development well at the Tahiti field on Green Canyon Block 640 in the Gulf of Mexico. The Tahiti field commenced production in May 2009 in water depths of 3,998 feet (1,219 meters). Chevron is the operator and holds a 58% interest. Other partners include StatoilHydro (25%) and Total (17%).

Chevron Pumps First Oil from Tahiti Field in Deepwater GOM
